posterior parahippocampal gyrus ( PPHG )

The term posterior parahippocampal gyrus refers to the more caudal of two parts of the parahippocampal gyrus defined by dissection of the limbic lobe in the human ( Gray-1918b ) and the macaque ( Martin-2000 ). The other part is the anterior parahippocampal gyrus. The PPHG is bounded medially by the presubiculum of the hippocampal complex and laterally by the fusiform gyrus ( Crosby-1962 ). Histologically, Brodmann-1909 classed it as perirhinal area 34; ( Economo-1927 ) as area TH, which included an internal area THa. The PPHG has no topological equivalent in the smooth cortex of the rodent and no histological equivalent to the neocortical PPHG between presubiculum and more lateral temporal area TEa in the rat are. All areas between the presubiculum in the rat are located in the entorhinal cortex and perirhinal cortex ( Swanson-1994 ). Functionally, it and the fusiform gyrus together constitute the posterior parahippocampal cortex ( Glasser-2016 ). Updated 6 Jun 2024.
