Barrington's nucleus
The term Barrington's nucleus refers to a group of neurons embedded in the pontine central gray of the pontine tegmentum. Located ventromedial to the rostral pole of locus ceruleus and lateral to the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus, it is found in the human ( Blessing-2012 ), the macaque ( Paxinos-2009a ), the rat ( Swanson-2004 ), and the mouse ( Franklin-2008 ).
Functionally it is part of the dorsal pontine gray of the subcortical motor system ( Swanson-2004 ). It projects to parasympathetic neurons that in turn project to the pelvic viscera involved in urination, defecation, and genital functions. ( Blessing-2012 ).
