brainstem ( BRS )
The term brainstem (BRS) refers to a composite substructure of the brain (BRN). It is the part of the cerebrospinal trunk (CST) that is located within the cranial cavity. Several common definitions have included different structures ( Anthoney-1994 ). All have included the midbrain (MBR), pons (PON) and medulla (MDL). Some have included parts of the interbrain (IBR) and a few have included the cerebellum (CBL). For consistency with the current three-part model of the central nervous system (CNS) as consisting of cerebrum (CRB), CBL and CST ( Swanson-2004 ), the NeuroNames definition includes the IBR as part of the CST and excludes the CBL as a separate structure.
