medullary gustatory area

The term medullary gustatory area refers to the part of the rostral portion of the solitary nucleus of the medulla that is involved in taste percetion. It is identified on the basis of connectivity and responsivity to stimulation of taste receptors of the tongue and soft palate. In the human and the macaque it includes the gustatory nucleus, which is located laterally in the rostral portion of the solitary nucleus, and in the prefacial extension of the solitary nucleus. It receives taste afferents from the glossopharyngeal nerve and the intermediate nerve ( Pritchard-2012 ). In the rat it is located in the rostromedial zone of the solitary nucleus ( Swanson-2004 ).
