accessory nerve nucleus

The term accessory nerve nucleus refers to a group of nerve cells located in the anterior gray column of the spinal cord of the human at cervical segments 1 to 5 or 6. It gives rise to the spinal part of the accessory nerve ( Carpenter-1983; Crosby-1962 ). It is found also in the macaque ( Paxinos-2009a ), the rat ( Swanson-2004 ), and the mouse ( Franklin-2008 ). Functionally it belongs to the somatic motoneuron pools of the subcortical motor system ( Swanson-2004 ).
