medial posterior parahippocampal cortex ( PHCpm )

The term medial posterior parahippocampal cortex refers to the most medial of three parts of the functionally defined posterior parahippocampal cortex (PHCp) in the human ( Glasser-2016 ). It is located in the posterior parahippocampal gyrus and defined on the basis of internal structure as area THa of Economo.( Economo-1927 ). It is also described as the medial part of area 27 of Brodmann ( Garey-1999 ). The other parts of PHCp are the intermediate posterior parahippocampal cortex and lateral posterior parahippocampal cortex. It may occur in the macaque as area TH (macaque) ( Morecraft- 2012 ). It is not found in the rat ( Paxinos-2009b ) and mouse ( Franklin-2008 ) where PHCp is not subdivided. PHCpm was not activated during multiple tasks involving higher level cortical functions in the human Connectome Project ( Glasser-2016 ). Updated 30 May 20 2024.
